Core Collection Information

This blog was created by Steven Brummel, MLIS student at Dominican University and librarian at Yorkville High School. I currently hold degrees in History for Secondary Education, Film, and Theater. If you have any questions about the information on this site feel free to contact me at sbrummel@y115.org.

About the Library

Currently the Yorkville High School Library is under construction with an estimated opening date of August, 2015. While that is taking place we are temporarily located in the Cafetorium with all of our services still functioning. We service all areas of study in the high school, and we are currently focused on updating our non-fiction material.

The high school system in Yorkville serviced 1,668 students during the 2012-2013 school year. The school focuses on non-fiction, fiction, and reference titles to meet the needs of our student body. We focus on expanding the collection to coincide with the Common Core initiative, and work closely with the staff of the school to enhance each departments curriculum. As the school grows and evolves it is our duty to grow and evolve with them.

Our collection goals maintain that we will improve scholarship in the schools by meeting the needs of the student. These needs include scholarly necessity, inquisitive exploration, or recreational enjoyment. It is our belief that students are entitled to access of materials that we are capable of providing. If we are unable to provide what the student needs it is our duty to help them locate the materials in question.

Selection Criteria

This library does not currently have a selection development policy. The selection of books was under my discretion, and the resources I used for each type of material is posted at the bottom of each page. Because there is no policy in place I created guidelines based on previous policies I have used to create a unique model for this project.

Relevance:

Books will be chosen based on their compliance with the Common Core. They are to adhere to the curriculum of the subject area, and support Yorkville High Schools Course Guide. This purchases support the requests of the Spanish teachers to attain more resources based on Spanish culture and influence. This need can be found in the Course Guide in a statement by the Department Chair, Thea Roessler. "Students are exposed not only to another means of communication, but also to opportunities to appreciate cultural differences and tolerance for cultural individuality."

Choice Consideration:

Resources were given consideration based on their proposed value as compared to their price. They were then considered in relation to their contemporaries by using resource guides to make appropriate selections. The Spanish Civil War and the culture of Mexico were given extra consideration based on the wishes of the department staff, but others were chosen to fill out weaknesses in the collection as well.

The librarian focused their selection of materials with the assumption that they would be used in a research capacity. This collection is designed to fulfill multiple topic areas, and include multiple sources for student and staff use.
